Prof Rafiq Essop is brilliant, cool, empathic ; I cannot find the requisite superlatives to describe the incredible care and life-saving medical intervention I was to receive at his skilled hands on two separate and both quite desperate occasions. It didn't hurt discovering that we were primary school-mates many moons ago, and despite his remarkable accomplishments, treated and extended to me the courtesy one would a friend and equal. I believe this modesty and humanity belies his remarkable medical skills, and extends to all and everyone he interacts with.
