MADIKWE Is situated against the Botswana border, just three hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is one of South Africa's prime safari destinations. Location: The Mafikeng Game Reserve is located against the municipal boundary of Mahikeng, the Capital City, extending eastwards to cover an area of 4 600 ha of open Kalahari grassland and acacia thorn scrub. To reach the Reserve entrance drive into Mahikeng on the R503 (Lichtenburg Road), cross over the bridge and turn right into Shippard Street. Travel east for 2 km and turn right into Jacaranda Street (immediately after the sportsground) and continue out of the suburbs to the gate.

The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg National Park - a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature. The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills - the formation rises from the surrounding plains like a bubble. The structure of the park is termed the "Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex". Ancient, even by geological time scales, this extinct volcano is the most perfect example of an alkaline ring complex. This small but scenic reserve conserves attractive riverine bush and is a popular angling and hiking destination, along the tranquil river frontage environment. Wolwespruit is one of the least known of the North West parks and has retained much of the appeal of the natural riverine environment. It also conserves a variety of plains game.
