Founded in 1999, HEAPS key objective was to serve as conduit for funding for 10 community based organizations providing palliative care services to HIV and TB infected residents between 2002 to 2005. In 2006-8 HEAPS was one of the NGO's that founded the mentoring resources network to provide capacity building to local CBO's with funding from the Netherlands Embassy and the National Department of Health. In 2009 on wards HEAPS began to provide direct HIV and AIDS services to the communities in MP, FS and GP provinces after the mentored CBO's became independent and received grants from the provincial department of Health.

Yabonga Children's Project was founded in 1998 by Ursel Barnes and Ulpha Robertson. The initial project supported women running creches in their backyards, by introducing an educational programme to better prepare children for formal schooling. By 2001, Yabonga was introduced to the plight of pregnant women who believed their deaths were imminent. In 2004, the first of twelve Yabonga HIV Support Centres was opened on the premises of a community clinic. In 2006 the programme for Orphans and Vulnerable Children was launched with 35 children. By 2021, the number has grown to 1200.
