The core business of Child Welfare South Africa Knysna is child protection and they operate within the Knysna Magisterial district. This is done at 3 levels of intervention. Casework involves a one to one contact and all cases that require statutory intervention are dealt with at this level Children who have been placed in alternative care are dealt with through all three models - casework, groupwork and the Community development approach. Child Welfare are also involved in preventive work which is mostly done at the 3rd level and have just run the LET"S GET REAL programme in our local schools. Children in alternative care are monitored until they turn 18 and are discharged from the conditions of the Child Care Act. Child Welfare have approximately 800 children on their caseloads of which plus / minus 200 are legally placed in alternative care - fostercare, adoption, children's homes and schools of industry.
