The Handgun Hunters Association of Southern Africa (HHASA) was formed about 25 years ago when a group of enthusiastic handgun hunters recognised the need and benefits of an association which would cater specifically for the interests of the handgun hunter. HHASA has been promoting the interests of handgun hunters, and building the public image and awareness of this unique and specialised type of hunting, ever since. The Handgun Hunters Association has subsequently grown to a formidable voice amongst hunters and is represented on various national hunting bodies. HHASA is affiliated to CHASA (The Confederation of Hunters Associations of South Africa) . Members are represented on the various relevant national forums related to hunting, conservation and firearm ownership in this way. It is through the CHASA affiliation that our association ensures that handgun hunters contribute to the shaping of legislation and conservation guidelines which affect us and all hunters.

Other provinces or regions in South Africa have recreational hunters’ associations, game ranchers’ associations, clay-target shooting associations etc, all as seperate entities. In the Eastern Cape, there is one association that hosts all role-players in the safari industry, namely East Cape Game Management Association (ECGMA) . It was established in 1980, and total membership counts at well over 1200 members, of which the majority are recreational hunters. The latter division has branches in various regions. Way back in 1984, ECGMA was the initiator of the concept of catalogue game sales in South Africa (and in Africa, for that matter), an example followed by the entire game industry in Southern Africa. With the advent of the implementation of the new Firearms Control Act in 2004, ECGMA had its staff members trained and registered as assessors and moderators, and firearm training of members (and non-members) are done almost on a daily basis. ECGMA has developed a shooting range ...
