Providing an additional 200 hectares of burial grounds, it will service Midrand and Alexandra. There is room for 720 000 new burial sites. getiimage. jpg As with other Johannesburg City Parks' new cemeteries, the design of Waterval Cemetery incorporates the natural landscape and indigenous flora and fauna. The concept of Waterval is to create a natural-environment approach, low maintenance with water-wise plants and only low headstones or base stones allowed. Building of the cemetery included a comprehensive road network; storm water, sewer and irrigation systems; lighting landscaping and demarcation of grave sites; ablution facilities; fencing; signage and security and construction of an administrative block. Maintenance Programme is every 14 days.

The cemetery is laid out in neat straight roads with designated religious sections, including Dutch Reformed, Church of England, Roman Catholic, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish. The Jewish and Muslim sections each have their own entrances and, in the corner of the cemetery, is a crematorium established in 1932. This is the burial place of award-winning musician Enoch Sontonga, the composer of Nkosi SikeleliAfrica. Against the fence Bremfontein lies a section of Pauper's graves, which are unmarked. These were recently discovered to be those of the miners from the 1922 Miner's Strike. Not far from here are the graves of the once-infamous Foster Gang, who gripped the public's imagination with a wild chase and shoot-out with the police in 1914.

In 1993, 13 hectares were donated to the city for public recreation and, eventually with the other sections, became the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens, Marks Parks Sports Club and the Westpark Cemetery. Today, the sprawling cemetery is the resting place of thousands of Johannesburg residents, and has separate Chinese, Muslim...
